This is the Chick-fil-A of hospitals. From the pre-surgery consultation through my post-op follow-up, the care I received far exceeded my expectations. It was so good that I committed each staff member's name to memory to give them credit in this review.
Let's start with Dr. Shonka. The man is a legend and his team is amazing. He answered about a dozen questions during our consultation a couple of months ago and then absolutely delivered in the surgery. I was speaking so well the next morning that my wife couldn't even tell I'd been intubated or had a thyroidectomy the day before. I honestly didn't expect it to go as well as it did, or to feel this good several weeks later.
In pre-op, Dr. Gutierrez asked me, "How attached are you to your beard?" "Pretty attached," I replied. I pointed at my wife, who said, "I'm quite attached to it." Dr. Gutierrez laughed and said she would see what she could do. Folks, she trimmed my beard so well (does she moonlight as a barber??) and then gently taped it to my face so I could keep it.
Yvonne, the nurse who prepped me for surgery, was so caring and friendly. She continued checking on us, asking us if we needed anything and were comfortable. She ensured I wasn't cold and took care of my CPAP so it was ready for me post-op.
Dr. Osborne and Dr. Z were fantastic anesthesiologists. They made sure they knew about any medication allergies I had and addressed all of our concerns about anesthesia. They really put my mind at ease.
Nathan, my recovery nurse, was so kind to us. I was barely conscious, but I was lucid enough to remember his name and how he worked hard to alleviate the nausea. He was also kind to my wife, who had been waiting until the wee hours of the night for me to wake up.
Beena, my nurse upstairs after admittance, was a true all-star. She didn't only care for me, which was all she was expected to do. Beena also cared for my wife, bringing her food and ensuring she was comfortable and had all she needed.
Rachel was so great at my post-op follow-up. She commented on how good the scar looked and answered all our questions about how my body was recovering. She encouraged me to listen to my body, which, as a patient, made me feel seen and heard.
This was my first-ever surgery. I was nervous about everything, but this hospital's staff are exceptional. My experience at UVA Hospital was incredible, and like Chick-fil-A, they truly deliver second-mile-service.
