I'm new to the area and looking for a dentist. This dentist was recommended by a friend. I scheduled an appointment for a routine cleaning for . The x-rays were taken and the hygienist cleaned by teeth. I thought the hygienist did good job, no complaints there. The dentist came and checked me out. She checked out my mouth, tongue, teeth and felt the upper throat/ neck area. I go to the front desk when done and I'm told I owe a $50 because I haven't made my deductible. So that means for me, who gets checked every six months, I'm paying $25 each time basically. This doesn't make sense to me. This is new to me, as I've never had to pay for preventative services before. I asked are you sure, the lady in the front said yes. Okay so I pay the $50. I call my insurance to confirm, if I had a deductible, and my insurance said No deductible. I called back the dentist saying that they made a mistake, and I would like to be reimbursed as preventative care is 100% covered. The lady on the phone said They had been having issues with the system, and it was automatically charging $50 to people. She said I might have to bring my card in for a refund but will try to return on the card and puts me on hold. She comes back on the phone and said that the $50 was for an oral cancer screening. The code was D0431. I don't recall them doing anything extra at all besides cleaning my teeth. I looked up this code and apparently, it's for more than just looking. Devices such as a VELScope etc is supposed to be used, which I do not recall. I found this to be really shady so be cautious.
