Around the end of summer 2021 I tore my shoulder in the gym. I procrastinated for awhile before finally missing my weight lifting life so much that I went on Google looking up orthopedic doctors in the area. Dr. O'Connell was one of the ones that popped up. Saw his large amount of 5 star ratings and figured that was good enough for me. Scheduled an appointment. Went in, he did some checks on my movement and my pain, and gave his thoughts. He is VERY knowledgeable on his area of expertise and communicates phenomenally. Scheduled an MRI and it confirmed what he suspected. Few tears in the joint of my shoulder. Scheduled my surgery for Feb 7th, 2023. Surgery went well. Adjusting to life in a sling for some time was not fun. Me being paranoid, every little ache and pain I felt in the months afterwards made me think, "Did something go wrong? Is this normal? Is this just about as well as I can expect from now on?" But I kept calm and stuck with the physical therapy and my doctor's appointments. He cleared me back in June and even then I was still having some aches and didn't have my full range of motion back. Kinda got me down cause I figured that was the new normal. After awhile though, I realized my shoulder seemed to feel completely normal. I started back in the gym a few weeks ago now. No pain. Today I put up 135x8 on the bench press where I couldn't do a 2 push-ups without feeling like someone was stabbing me in the shoulder, pre-surgery. Seeing a lot of progress and getting stronger everytime I go, with no reason to think I won't surpass the level I was at in 2021. I would grade my shoulder as 95-100% of what it was before. 95% only because I'm still only 7 1/2 months out from surgery and I'm taking it slow. OrthoVirginia as a whole was great. From the doctor's side to the physical therapy. I hope I never have to go back, knock on wood. But if I do that's where I'll be headed. If you have an issue/injury with what Dr. O'Connell specializes in, he is the doctor to go see. 5 star ratings all day long and he deserves every single one. Thank you, Dr. O'Connell.
