After nearly 4.5 months without healthcare coverage for our daughter — and still no clear answers from NJ FamilyCare — I want to share our experience.
Our daughter has never had healthcare coverage. Our information was forwarded from Get Covered NJ, and despite us providing all required follow-up documentation in ample time after birth, NJ FamilyCare made miscalculations and errors on their end. Since then, it has been an exhausting and frustrating cycle of trying to get clarity and resolution.
We’ve been doing everything we can:
• We've made countless phone calls.
• Every time we speak with someone, it's a different representative — there is no direct point of contact, and we get conflicting information each time.
• One rep tells us we need to submit a new application (which we absolutely should not have to do), while another says it’s unnecessary.
• A supervisor was supposed to call us back within 72hours — it’s been over three days, and we’ve heard nothing.
• In the meantime, we’ve been paying for our daughter’s medical care out of pocket, which is not sustainable. Unfortunately, unlike my husband and I who are covered through the Marketplace, we do not have the option to pay out of pocket for her coverage because of income limits. We are told we have to use NJ family Care for her.
We’re incredibly grateful for the help we’ve received from Senator Scanlon’s office, who contacted the Division of Human Services on our behalf — but even after 10 business days, there’s still been no response or progress from NJ FamilyCare.
It’s disheartening and, frankly, unacceptable that families in New Jersey are left with no answers, no access to consistent information, and no healthcare for their children — due to issues entirely outside of their control.
We’re still waiting, still calling, and still hoping this gets resolved soon. Families deserve better.
