I have been seeing Dr. Landau for several years now, after being passed around through the practice where he worked, and I wound up being assigned to him because all of the previous doctors had left. In my most recent appointment, the first appointment of the day at 9:20, where he arrived at 9:35, he looked at my one prescription for synthetic thyroid hormone and began questioning why I was on the medication. My total thyroidectomy from 9 years earlier has been in my records and every year for my physical I have to remind him. I asked, "Is it not in my record?" He admitted it was. On top of that the lab tech was not there that morning, which the intake nurse shared with me, yet he only noticed that as he was leaving the office to submit my lab order. He had to walk past the empty lab office to get to my exam room -- what doctor does not assess the surroundings they're entering when they arrive at work? During the appointment I shared that I was feeling some anxiety, having trouble sleeping and concerned about perimenopause symptoms and a very persistent pre-diabetic A1C lab result over the past year despite drastic changes in my diet and exercise. I stated that I felt like I had to be "suffering" to gain any kind of treatment because that was the response I got last year's appointment when I addressed perimenopause, to endure symptoms unless I was really "suffering." He asked if I had gone a year without having a period, and then asked about sleep apnea symptoms and if I had hot flashes. Separate but related to this review: there is a systemic problem in the medical community where there seems to be a lack of addressing the decline in estrogen in aging women and the cascade of negative health effects that result; the solution is to pitch you to an OB/GYN for those "female problems." As a black woman approaching 50, this is not the guy for me. When I shared that his demeanor felt dismissive, he stated, "I'm sorry you felt that way," which is not an actual apology. I will have to seek out a new PCP, this one is not an advocate for me as his patient.
