Dr. Butler was very kind. Although my memory was worse than it is currently is, I remember him well because of his true eagerness to help me. A doctor that actually gave a four letter word. He actually cares about his patients which is refreshing when you have dozens of doctors who don’t always seem to listen anymore. He was attentive & knowledgable. I don’t remember what tests he did but I remember my boyfriend telling me he was extremely thorough. I’m 28 now & I have a cardiac stent due to a head on collision that ruptured my aorta 2yrs ago. I’ve been recovering physically & mentally ever since. He understood that most of what I could tell him was questions my boyfriend wrote down for me to ask & when I forgot questions or asked the same question more than once...or twice, he put my mind at ease. For me I felt ashamed that my memory continues to escape me & the acceptance he made me feel made a big impact. He assured me that it wasn’t my fault after the trauma I had been through. To be assured, understood, & followed up with me or my boyfriend (I can’t remember which unfortunately. It might have been both of us that he made should to send a reminder to) before appointments or follow ups (with him knowing & understanding my memory would effect appointments potentially.
I’m just really grateful knowing that I have a cardiologist that understands that healing from an accident that I had a 10% or less chance of surviving initially, has had lasting effects that I couldn’t anticipate, & cared enough to go the extra mile to make sure I remembered my appointments/follow ups & talked to me like a human being instead of a stupid child just because I have memory problems. I’ve had a doctor call me childish & to come back to her with my MD before. I remember how deflated I felt & it made a lasting impact on me. She had no right to say what she said after I had expressed my concerns with a heartburn medication that I thought wasn’t necessary given that I was already on a dozen other medications & didn’t want to be put on even more medications that interacted with one another. So having a doctor that genuinely cares enough about my opinions or thoughts regarding my medical treatment plans, even though my memory gets fuzzy meant a ton to me & my boyfriend. Dr. Butler even made sure that my boyfriend attended the next time I saw him so I could have a backup encase I forgot what I was supposed to do next. He helped me schedule things before I walked out of the door so I had it set in my calendar with instructions on what to do, where to park, what floor, turn by turn instructions typed in my calendar so we could get down to the problem I was having at the time.
I’m just so incredibly thankful. If you need a cardiologist, Dr. Matthew Butler, MD at Advent Health is your guy.
