My appointment with Dr. Azary was the worst experience I have ever had with a Neurologist. Highlights of our visit included discussing what she called “seizure-like activity”, recent changes to my medications had caused a rapid decline of my mental health, and a review of my medical history that included TBI, migraines with aura, and the recent finding of a lipoma in my brain. The best word I can gather for the treatment I received would be “dismissive”. When I reviewed my visit summary (as I always do), I saw that she indicated comments about me being teary and emotional; Something explicitly discussed, as previously stated, as a huge concern to me given I was totally fine prior to recently starting a new medication. However, she used this observation to assert repeatedly that my seizure-like activity was (literally in all caps in her notes) HIGHLY SUSPECTED to be psychogenic. Given I had waited months to see her, I was completely crushed.
I am immensely grateful for my team at Dartmouth Neurology who didn’t rely solely on a 20 minute interaction or pick and choose what information was relevant to my case, but instead admitted me for 8 days and got me the help I needed. I have been on medication to treat epileptic seizures for 4 months, and even though we are still playing with the dosage since I have a few per month still, they are much less frequent. I have hope again that someday I may have my life back.
All this time later, though, I still cannot believe the mistreatment I experienced from this doctor, and I hope that anyone considering this practice for epileptic care goes elsewhere - especially if you are a young woman easily written off as emotional.
**Edit: I’ve gone ahead and left a message with the patient liaison and will happily speak with that department should they choose to return that call.
