I was referred to Dr. Hanssen by the ER in 2022 after a dog bite injury in which my finger was broken. I still think about this visit when I think about terrible patient care.
First of all, Dr. Hanssen was very rough trying to remove the bandage which was stuck to sutures and blood. It was still very painful in general, and it was terrible to be tugged at that hard. I had to ask if I instead could have some time to soak the bandage off since I was in a lot of pain from the yanking.
He examined my finger and said it would heal fine without treatment, didn't need the splint from the ER, and just to rinse it daily with alcohol.
I followed up a week later with a different orthopedic doctor who took a separate x-ray and immediately asked why I didn't have my finger in a splint. I explained Dr. Hanssen told me that was not necessary and that it would heal fine. This doctor told me in addition to the fracture, I had a mallet finger injury which would cause a permanent deformity if I didn't immediately start splinting it. I was appalled, and since I play violin, was scared this would have affected my ability to play. I ended up needing over 6 weeks of splinting, and my finger still healed a bit crooked.
In addition to the negative office experience, it still scares me to think what would've happened if I had just followed the advice to do nothing. The only positive is that the physical therapist told me it was the only finger dog bite injury he had seen that had not gotten infected, so maybe the alcohol worked. I would suggest seeing a hand specialist instead.
