This is the best city rec center/gym that I've ever seen in a small town. For a place with just over 1,000 residents, it's pretty amazing that Deadwood has a place with a weight lifting gym, cardio room, basketball court, swimming pool, running track, handball courts, and classrooms - all indoors. People use it to work out, kids use it for a place to hang out, and school sports teams use it as a place for meets and tournaments. But most of the time - especially weekday evenings - it doesn't feel crowded in the least. The facility itself is pretty impressive, with parts housed in the 1912 stone-block civic auditorium, and the rest (mostly the pool and track) in a new annex built in 2008. Despite the age of the building, the place feels new and vibrant and bright. I run here about three times a week in the winter, and go to a yoga class once a week. Hard to imagine a better place in a town this size. Staff are friendly and seem to be well-trained. One of the standout features: it's incredibly inexpensive. Day passes for visitors are just a few bucks, and monthly memberships are much cheaper.
