I had a lateral spine fusion by Dr. Benjamin Bjerke on January 31, 2025, and couldn’t be happier with the results. The pain from my spinal stenosis and slipped disc came on suddenly with severe sciatica pain that I had never experienced before. It got so bad that I had to have my husband take me to the ER. At the ER, I was given pain meds and was recommended to see Dr. Bjerke. I asked various health professionals and checked on line reviews about Dr. Bjerke, and found all to be positive. I called and made an appointment. The staff were friendly and I didn’t have to wait long to get back to see him. I liked Dr. Bjerke right away and thought he was very nice and down to earth. After I had an MRI, I saw him a second time and he explained my condition clearly that there was nothing that could help me but surgery. He showed my husband and me the pictures and it was evident nothing else would work. Before seeing the pictures I was hoping PT would do the trick. But I was happy that I did not have to wait around in pain doing unnecessary things. The Surgery Scheduler knew I was in bad pain and scheduled me for a bit over a week out. Dr. Bjerke sent a text to me the evening before surgery and told me to get some rest and things would be fine. This made me feel confident that I had a caring surgeon. After my surgery, I spent one night in the hospital then was ready to go home. Before I left the hospital, Dr. Bjerke came to see how I was doing, and asked if my pain on my right side was gone. It was gone! I was so grateful that just one day after the surgery the sciatica pain was gone. I wore a back brace for six weeks, anytime I was not in bed. I followed the instructions to not bend, twist or lift anything over 10lbs. I was able to walk all I could, without it causing me pain. I liked that I could walk since I’m active and want to stay fit. So many people commented on how well I was doing and couldn’t believe I’d recently had spine surgery. My recovery seemed to go by quickly, since I was not in much pain and was able to walk around and not be bed ridden at all! I started PT around 8 weeks out and it did not take long to get my core strength back. Now I’m back to my old routine. I can do everything I did before, but I will always take extra caution when it comes to my back. If I would ever need spine surgery again, I would go back to Dr. Bjerke without hesitation. I have so much gratitude to Dr. Bjerke!!!
