I want to take a moment to recognize Nurse Katie Wyns, who provided extraordinary care to my family during a recent visit to the ER. In the middle of what felt like chaos, she took the time to genuinely talk with us and make us feel seen, heard, and cared for. Her calm presence and compassionate approach changed everything for us.
We came in frustrated, scared, and unfortunately, not very kind to the staff initially, but Katie never made us feel like we were a burden. Instead, she patiently walked us through the process, answered our questions, and treated us with dignity and respect. Her kindness completely changed our experience.
At discharge, Katie took my family member out in a wheelchair, but we were having car trouble. To our surprise, Katie stayed after her shift to help us get it going and get situated safely. That’s when we found out she's a single mom working night shifts to care for her kids, has just completed her master's in nursing, and was even a Daisy Award nominee as a student nurse (I asked about the Daisy pin on her badge!). Her dedication and heart go far beyond the hospital walls.
We had a bad experience at Piedmont in the past and were hesitant to return, but because of people like Katie, I now feel confident in the care we receive here. She is the kind of nurse who reminds you what healthcare should feel like: human, hopeful, and healing.
Thank you, Katie. You are a true light in a tough moment, and we are forever grateful!
