I was treated for a truly life-threatening acute aortic aneurysm by Dr.s Alexandra Kharazi and Seemal Mumtaz, something that literally kills 9 out of 10 people when it occurs. Had they not effectively and so skillfully surgically corrected that aneurysm, I would have died within a few hours. That’s the “nuts and bolts” of my situation.
The story behind the story is, as you might expect, far more complex. From the moment I was taken from the Emergency Room to the Operating Room, Dr. Kharazi rarely left my side, as both she and Dr. Mumtaz were justifiably fearful that I would not make it to the operating room, let alone survive the extensive surgery I required. Her actions demonstrated her extraordinary training, skills, and dedication needed to stay laser-focused on my surgery, which although extensive (12 hours), was successful. It’s an old saying that someone “has your life in their hands”. Every time any surgical team operates, this is 100% true, and I am deeply thankful to both of these exceptional cardio-thoracic surgeons and the phenomenal team that they have put together at Sharp Grossmont Hospital.
But beyond that, Dr. Kharazi and Dr. Mumtaz demonstrated tremendous personal concern in me as an individual. Before surgery, during, and after, Dr. Kharazi knows that it isn’t a “heart” she is treating, it is a “person”; someone with a family who’s entire world is also in her hands. That is an enormous responsibility, especially when the patient has a critical heart condition, yet Dr. Kharazi accepts that responsibility because she knows that her training and skills are that person’s best chance to see their spouse, children, and grandchildren again, even when she knows that the odds may be stacked against a successful result.
I sincerely hope to never require another surgery such as this, but if it were ever to become necessary, I would have no hesitation in having her care for me, or recommending her to someone needing her expertise and experience.
