I’ve attended The Neighborhood Church for over 10 years now. It’s the first time I’ve ever put down roots like this, and I love them. They’re family. They check in, and they don’t judge. Some people will still love you even when they don’t like you—or when you don’t like them! 🤣
My attendance is far from consistent, and I miss altogether during tax season, but they don’t forget me. I need that so badly, especially during tax time. 😭🥴
It’s where I finally understood that I didn’t have to do a doggone thing to get into heaven because God loves me no matter how screwed up I am. And they also—this is big—taught me grace. Not just grace for others, which is a pretty big deal, but they taught me to give grace to myself. And as a Latina woman, let me tell you, that is effing haaaaaard. 😂
Excuse the language, but I’m a tomboy at heart. Pastor Joe Liles just chuckles when I do that. 🥴
This is also the first place where I truly learned to respect people younger than me. It’s a weird chola thing, culturally. I’m not that old either, but still—Pastor Joe Liles and his oh-so-very-patient and way out of his league wife, Jessica—they won us over. We sat them down and interrogated them for a three-hour lunch when we realized we liked the place but still wanted to know what the ingredients were in the Kool-Aid.
If you can’t make it in person, it’s live on Sundays through the YouTube channel. (Joe is a total geek for finding new ways to engage, and he totally understands the assignment!) You can also watch it at your convenience.
I hope you visit us sometime. 🥰
