Have been a life-long practicing Catholic. Recently relocated to Mt. P after having attended Nativity Catholic Church on James Island since moving to Charleston in 2005. Tried St. Benedict Christmas Eve Mass because it was close to our house and we heard the music was supposed to be good. Was so disappointed and astounded that the priest would seize upon such an important service -- one that's usually attended by more casual church goers as well as visiting friends and family -- to lecture in a fire and brimstone manner about the evils of abortion. What a lost opportunity to inspire, lift up and encourage new parishioners. This church is unfortunately very political and negative -- and the priest is practicing old school Catholicism -- the kind that drives people to leave the religion in droves. No matter how pretty the church is or how nice the music is, it can't overcome bad preaching. We will not be back. I am sad that people are attending this Church and thinking that the type of services put on here are representative of what the modern Catholic Church is all about -- because they are not. Will pray for the priest and the parish. Hope they can heal and remember why Christ died for us, and specifically, the message of the love and forgiveness implicated for everyone by His sacrifice.
