When I talk about Second Baptist Church, I immediately think of the Word of God. Truly, you HAVE to love the Word of God to love Second. The line ins't drawn with music, style, drums vs. a piano, praise band vs. a choir, teaching vs. preaching, jeans vs. ties--these are preferences. What draws the line is the Word of God. And for as long as I can remember (and I am in my mid-30's now), Second has ALWAYS stood on, favored, cherished, preached, sung, taught, fought for, spread, relied on, and ENJOYED the Word of God. Second is family-friendly, comfortable, and kind, but so is McDonald's...I mean seriously. Let's talk about the cross and the church; and when we do, we get past "comfortable" and "kind". We certainly don't leave them behind, but we get to the Word of God and the living Word, and His history and value, and the Word's and church's inseparable connection.
A lot of people today are looking for family-friendly anythings because of their family. I am for that, and I believe Second is that. I myself do not have a family of my own (we won't talk about my issues, lol). My point--I still chose Second. I chose it because of the Word of God. Sometimes I come to Second and feel uncomfortable because the truth and power of the Word makes me feel uncomfortable. That's a good thing. I need the Word to continually help me kill sin in me. I really don't just want a good experience--I can go to Disney World and have a good experience. I want to hear from God. At Second, the preaching is focussed on the Word of God. World missions (a passion of mine) is focussed on the Word of God. Conversations in the hall are seasoned with the Word of God. Fun is fun because there is a mutual value and respect for the Word of God. NO ONE AT SECOND IS PERFECT--all will agree. But thank goodness, because we remember, "consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. But by HIS doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, 'Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.'"
