Highly recommend visiting this beautiful and historically significant landmark during your Tucson trip. It is easy to get to and free to visit (just note church hours and Mass times) but you DO need a car to get out to it, it’s about a 15 min drive from town. They’ve just started a 3-year restoration project, so you can see them actively working on the facade right now which is pretty neat. There’s the main chapel, a side chapel, the grounds, and a small but informative (and free!) museum tucked inside which explains the history of the mission and has some artifacts. It’s easy to walk around and explore and doesn’t take too much time to see everything (maybe an hour).
Just as a note, if you have the time (and the aforementioned car), I think this is really interesting to visit in conjunction with Tumacacori, which is an abandoned mission about 45 minutes south of Tucson and a national park. San Xavier del Bac is an interesting example of what that mission may have looked like if it hadn’t been abandoned.
