When you walk into Helia you know it’s unlike any other brewery you’ve been to. It’s the combination of the size, décor, vision, beer, staff that makes it stand out in the middle of the bursting bubble of an oversaturated craft beer/brewery market. It’s almost subconscious in why we choose to go to certain breweries and not others. Sometimes it’s food, added value of games and entertainment, but very few places feel like home. Very few places are as inviting and warm, bright and calming. The surfing and water aspect is not understated with the giant posted midwave as you walk in the door. Once you come here you really have to judge all your other favorite breweries under a brighter microscope because you can’t simply use dark woods and bro a place out with IPA’s. Breweries are an experience. The hanging basket lights and string lighting and wicker chairs and throw blankets are all testaments to their well thought out vision. The bathrooms even match the theme. The tiling all around really accents things and frames the non production areas. The projector screen is always playing something from sports to surf videos. It’s a fact that food is a contributing factor in bringing people and keeping people at breweries and they take pride in having a schedule and food line up. The added value of an outdoor patio, live music, open mic nights are things that many established places didn’t pick up on for months/years. They had that day one. It’s a big space and a little cold, but that’s really something of the season we are in and the size of the space.Owners Kelby and Thomas are always there and doing what most brewers didn’t/don’t do, and that’s growing their brand with personal relationships. They are honored to meet and mingle with the guests and since they are always there it’s easy to catch a few minutes with them. In a world of brewery beards Kelby’s moustache stands out (Tom Selleck who), he always has something super local to talk about and his laughs are genuine and deep. Thomas’ endless enthusiasm for food, surfing along with kind eyes of a world traveled Brazilian makes him easily personable. As some of you know I don’t mix beers until I’ve had the full line up and while I love their Happy I find it doesn’t blend as well as the Golden/Red. I had many a red off a keg recently and found the 4th as enjoyable as the 1st. Their new hazy and Cubano is a good mix, think semi juicy. Their beers are true to style and nothing out of bounds on ABV or IBU’s.Standard Vista Brewery hours, parking isn’t hard to find, prices are normal for the area, branded glassware is following the trend of moving away from the traditional pint shape. Merch is bright, simple. Concise, just like their logo and brand. Uncluttered from the designs to their menu.Additional shout outs to Tabi, Maria, Sonsie for taking care of the bar while the boys are disposed.
