My aunt stayed at Brickmont as a respite guest for a month and a half during July and August of this year. Though the facility is beautiful, the management showed gross incompetence in so many areas. The staff could not bring my aunt's medication on time- ie. bringing it five hours late with another medication it should not be paired with. We solved this problem by having my aunt administer her own medication. My aunt was not offered a bath for the first full week that she was there even though she was requesting one. My aunt needed to have meals delivered to the room and did not receive her breakfast twice. When she called down to follow up, she was told they only had dry cheerios to bring her. Other times the meal was rather late or the staff did not come to take her order. You can imagine how anxiety-producing it is for a limited mobility person to not know if they were going to get their next meal. We spoke with the regional director (as the executive director was fired in July) about this and there were some improvements in the predictability of meals. The chef, activities director, and facility manager were fired during the stay, so there were lapses in activities and help. The toughest thing was when I would call or email the nurse, I only got a response half of the time, or she said she would get back to me on something and never called back. It took 5 days to get an answer about the PT orders we gave them that were misplaced by them originally. Also, the caregivers were short with my aunt at times. Furthermore, every bill we received from them had an error, and when we emailed Billing as we were instructed to do, we didn't get a corrected statement for 4 weeks. The final bill had 13 room trays on it that she was not even there for. On a positive note, Laura, the concierge, and Ashley, the business manager, were both helpful. Hopefully the new executive director has been able to turn things around more. In summary, if you are considering putting your loved one in this facility, I would check with someone currently living there first to see if they have made positive changes.
