February 2023 has come and gone, and so has Valentine’s day. Whether you spent this valentine’s day with your significant other, your galentines, or simply by yourself, the excitement doesn’t need to stop there! The day of love might be over, but that shouldn’t keep you from curling up with your favorite (and now very cheap and discounted) Valentine’s day chocolates and watching some classic rom-coms all month long! Below is a list of some of the best ones out there, and here is a list of just a few more you can binge before the end of this very short month, or just if you’re in the mood for some romance and comedy!
HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS
How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is a witty romantic comedy starring Kate Hudson as she portrays journalist Andie Anderson and Matthew McConaughey as advertising exec Benjamin Barry. Both Andie and Ben are hoping to catch big breaks within their careers, and they finally stumble upon the best way to do so. For Andie? Pretend she’s head over heels in love with a guy that she drives him crazy enough to leave her within ten days. For Ben? Manage to snag a girl and be the best boyfriend he can be so she can attend the final gala with him so he can get the jewelry account he wants. Watch this 2003 classic for free on Pluto TV to see how crazy the two of them will get and the lengths they will go to win their bets.
SET IT UP
Set it up is another hilarious romantic comedy, that had a well-developed story and great hints of romance throughout the entire plot – which can be hard to say regarding new and more modern rom-coms. Not only do you get to watch the slow romance between lead actors, Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell, but you also get to laugh along as they plot and scheme to get their two overbearing bosses together, too. Deutch and Powell’s characters face many amusing obstacles along the way as they try to set their bosses up, but they, too, begin to slowly bond and care for each other along the way. Tune in on Netflix to watch this adorable and feel-good story.
ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE
Now this is a movie I come back to watch almost annually, and yes, it’s another new-age rom-com, but it is definitely worth your time. The story itself is heartwarming and the characters are hilarious but relatable. The film is about two childhood friends, Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) who reconnect as adults 15 years after they went their separate ways. Sasha is now a successful chef, and she returns to her hometown in San Francisco to open another one of her restaurants. Marcus, on the other hand, is a struggling musician still living in his childhood home while helping his father out with his plumbing business. Despite years of no contact and the differences in their lives, they reconnect and slowly emerge into a romantic relationship. Before it gets too far, however, they have to examine all the obstacles in their personal and professional lives before they can take their relationship to the next level. Watch this 2019 film on Netflix.
THE PRINCESS DIARIES
The Princess Diaries (2001) is a hilarious coming-of-age movie following a teenage girl named Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), who discovers she is the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Genovia! As she travels to Genovia, she meets her grandmother, the Queen, and she learns about her royal history, protocols, and the responsibilities and burdens that come with being a princess. Alongside these royal challenges, she needs to also master the challenges of navigating high school while dealing with her new royal status. Laugh along to this family-friendly classic on Disney Plus. If you enjoyed the first one, check out the sequel that came out in 2004 and in even more exciting news, there’s finally a third one under wraps!
FATHER OF THE BRIDE
Now, this is the oldest movie on the list, from 1991, and while I’m not typically a fan of super old movies, this one is a hilarious but heartwarming must-watch on Disney Plus. The film follows the father George Banks (played by Steve Martin) and his wife (played by Diane Keaton). Their daughter returns from her summer trip to Europe and springs the news onto her family that she’s engaged, much to her father’s dismay. Together, they navigate the ups and downs of finding the perfect dress, dealing with the intense costs and payments for the event, and handling crazy and invasive family members and in-laws. This romantic but hilarious film should certainly be a highlight on your must-watch list of rom-coms!
