Gardening offers numerous benefits for physical and mental well-being. It allows you to get physical exercise as you are doing rigorous activities such as digging, planting, weeding, and watering the garden. It is also great stress relief. Spending time in nature and engaging with plants has a calming effect on the mind. Plus, it gives you access to fresh and organic produce and ensures that you consume nutritious foods that are right there in your own backyard! So with all these benefits, what’s stopping you from creating your own garden? Below are some easy to follow steps on how to start that process.
PLAN FOR YOUR GARDEN
The first step in planning how to plant your garden is to determine your garden type. Decide if you want to plant a vegetable garden, a flower garden, an herb garden, or even a combination of all of these! Consider the amount of available space you have in your yard for these plants. Also be sure to consider the amount of sunlight hitting these areas, as well as what climate conditions are suitable for whatever plants you choose to garden. Then choose a location. Find a spot in your yard that receives adequate sunlight and has access to fresh water. Consider also the quality of the soil and whether or not you have a solid drainage system in place. Finally, prepare the soil. Clear out the area of any weeds, rocks, or additional debris. Loosen the soil using a garden fork or tiller to allow for room to plant everything. Add organic matter like compost or manure to improve the fertility and structure of the soil.
PLANT SHOPPING
Select your plants! Head down to Lowe’s or Home Depot or any other local plant shop and choose plants that are well-suited for your garden type and climate. After your extensive research about what plants will fit in your backyard, figure out where you can buy these plants and what sort of care goes into these plants. Consider factors like growth habits of these plants, how big or mature they will get at full bloom, how much water and sunlight they require, and what the planting season looks like.
PROVIDE CARE
Be sure to water your plants regularly and provide sufficient moisture. Remember, there is such a thing as overwatering! So be sure to watch how much water intake your plants receive. In weeks of heavy rain, there’s no need to go outside and water them again! Add mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and to suppress weeds growing around them. Monitor for pests and diseases, and even consider spraying around your plants with different pesticides that won’t harm the plants, but will prevent animals or insects from ripping your plants apart. Fertilize your plants as needed and be sure to prune or trim them when necessary. Regularly harvest your fruits, vegetables, or flowers when they are ready so as to prevent overgrowth. Remember, gardening is a learning process, and it will take time to develop your skills. Start small and you will gradually expand your garden as you gain experience, but be sure to enjoy the process and embrace the joy of growing your own plants!
