THE NAZCA LINES

In the arid plains of southern Peru, the Nazca Lines continue to captivate its visitors. They are a group of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert. They are enormous drawings created by removing the darker surface stones of the Earth which reveals the lighter-colored earth beneath. They were made by the Nazca people who lived in this region from around 200 BCE to 600 CE. The lines consist of hundreds of figures, with some as simple lines and others as intricate geometric shapes to show animals, plants, and humans. Some of the larger drawings are up to several hundred feet in length. The lines themselves are remarkable because they have been preserved so well over thousands of years. This is due to the dry and arid climate of the Nazca Desert which prevents the lines from facing erosion or natural decay. The purpose of the lines is still up for debate by historians and researchers today. Some theories suggest that they had religious and ceremonial significance, whereas others believe they functioned as the Nazca people’s astronomical calendars, markers for underground water resources, or even representations of stars and constellations.

THE LOST CITY OF MAYA

The Lost City of Maya refers to the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, which is located in present-day Guatemala. Tikal was one of the most powerful cities of the ancient Mayan civilization which flourished from 250 CE – 900 CE. Sadly, it was abandoned and largely forgotten by the time Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century. Tikal is renowned for its impressive architectural remains, such as large pyramids, temples, palaces, and even courts to play sports. The structure of the city is characterized by their distinctive architectural styles, which feature steep pyramids with temples atop. They were typically adorned with elaborate decorations and stone carvings. The reason for Tikal’s decline and abandonment is heavily debated, but some major factors include overpopulation, environmental degradation, warfare, and political instability. Other theories also mention a growing number of environmental stressors, such as deforestation and soil depletion, which would eventually lead to food shortages and then social unrest, therefore collapsing the city.

THE SUNKEN CITY OF THONIS-HERACLEION

Thonis-Heracleion, also known as the sunken city, is an ancient city in Egypt that was rediscovered underwater in the Aboukir Bay right off of the coast of Egypt. It was once a busy port city located at the mouth of the Nile River and was founded around the 8th century BCE. It was mentioned in ancient texts, but many doubted its existence as its exact location remained a mystery. The city thrived as a prosperous center of trade and attracted many merchants, sailors, and travelers across the ancient world. They facilitated the trade of many luxury items and foods between Egypt, Greece, and other Mediterranean civilizations. In the early 21st century, underwater archaeologists rediscovered this city, and revealed a trove of ancient artifacts that were preserved in remarkably good condition. Many monuments that were discovered included statues, temple remains, everyday objects, and religious artifacts.
