Read More"I recently had a disturbing experience at the Walmart on Westport Avenue in Shreveport (store #00448). After purchasing several items, including ice cream that began to melt, I sought assistance from an employee who helpfully took the melted pints. I returned to the ice cream aisle to select replacements. Upon exiting, I was confronted by an aggressive off-duty police officer working security.
Despite having my receipt and the employee's explanation of the situation, the officer accused me of theft. This was an unsettling and unprofessional encounter.
What's more concerning is that after the officer seemingly realized he had made a mistake, instead of apologizing, he appeared to escalate the situation. He repeatedly said to me, 'Be a man, be a man, be a man,' while also attempting to keep me engaged in a conversation, even suggesting we go outside to continue the discussion, seemingly to keep the exchange out of earshot of other shoppers. When I asked him what exactly I had done wrong, he was unable to provide a clear answer and refused to apologize.
It felt as though he was attempting to provoke me into breaking some sort of law, perhaps public disturbance or another offense. It was as if he was trying to manufacture a crime instead of simply acknowledging his mistake and apologizing.
Adding to the absurdity of the situation, the entire incident revolved around approximately $5 worth of ice cream. I had also purchased a box of wine, but the officer never mentioned the alcohol. It was all about those two pints of ice cream – which, I want to be clear, I did not steal.
I understand and support law enforcement officers earning extra money, and I have no issue with Walmart employing them in security roles. However, I do believe it's inappropriate for off-duty officers to wear their issued law enforcement uniforms while working for Walmart. If they are being paid by Walmart, they should be wearing a Walmart uniform, not representing their law enforcement agency.
Being falsely accused of theft, especially after an employee had already assisted me, was a humiliating and upsetting experience. The demeaning and unprofessional language used by the security officer only compounded the distress.
I am writing this review to express my extreme dissatisfaction with this incident. I believe Walmart needs to better train its security personnel on de-escalation tactics, ensure that customers are treated with respect, and require security personnel, including off-duty law enforcement, to wear Walmart uniforms. This experience has made me question the security protocols at this location and has significantly impacted my perception of Walmart's customer service."
