In 2010 the Davie Town Council dedicated the open space at SW 26 Street and Flamingo Road for the purpose of preserving and protecting burrowing owls who face a small risk of future extinction. They are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. These owls are small and live in underground burrows found usually in parks. In this case a park was created to protect the burrows. Three artificial burrows were created in the park with the help of students from Indian Ridge Middle School, members of Broward County, South Florida Audubon Society, Project Perch, and town staff. It is thought that the park is home to 11 burrowing owls. The park is actually located on two sides of a road. A major downside to the park is that there is no parking lot. I took a risk and parked anyway and could not believe my eyes when a saw an owl perched on his protection sign. I actually saw four owls hanging out the burrow but only one wanted his picture taken. I don't usually see owls so this was a real treat for me. In addition to the protected burrows the park also contained a pavilion, picnic tables, benches, a paved walking trail, and a small butterfly garden.
